4DX Continues Strong Performance in Japan, Accounting for More Than 10% of Box Office Gross for Summer’s Top Films in the Country

SEOUL AND LOS ANGELES  September 26, 2017, Release in Japan – CJ 4DPLEX, the leading 4D cinema company, has today announced that 4DX has been showing the remarkable box office success in Japan with this summer’s top grossing titles.

 

This success has been led by a mix of Hollywood blockbusters and local Japanese films.  In particular, this summer’s mega-hit franchises, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,”Transformers: The Last Knight,” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming” were key drivers, with 4DX accounting for more than 10% of the box office gross for each release (10.4%, 10.4% and 10.2%, respectively). This is significantly higher than the typical 4DX box office share in Japan (7%).

 

Since its Japan debut in 2013, 4DX has attracted almost 5.3 million moviegoers in Japan to see 140 titles showcased in the immersive format. The number of local Japanese films shown in 4DX has also increased each year, from nine in 2015 to eleven in 2016, and eleven in 2017 to date, with more to come. Most recently, these include Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale, King of Prism: Pride the Hero, and KanColle: The Movie.

 

4DX continues to receive enthusiastic reactions from Japanese fans as its expansion in Japan further solidifies it as a popular premium cinema option, while helping CJ 4DPLEX prove its unique brand value.
